Google Keep for Essay Feedback
Google Keep for Essay Feedback is one of the most brilliant things I have incorporated into my online grading. If you aren't familiar with Google Keep, it is Google's version of Evernote, or online bookmarking/note-taking. It is essentially a digital notepad that collects your thoughts, doodles, links, reminders, and allows you to organize them in a way that suits you. It's genius. Then again, isn't everything Google does? I rest my case.
So, here's how I use it: when grading essays, I split the screen between Google Keep and my Docs/Classroom page.
- Start with the Google Keep notepad blank or with the rubric items of the paper, or perhaps even a focus area like quote integration.
- I copy a youtube video of quote integration review and paste into the notepad because Lord knows someone is going to need the review. I like this because as much as we think we know as teachers, sometimes someone else might have the magic touch when it comes to explaining it better. Thanks Otherteachersouttherewhoscreencast!
- As you grade papers, copy/paste your comments as you go, especially if you've had to type the same thing twice.
- Cut/paste the unique errors comments into their doc and as a by-product, you have a rich document that articulates the class' progress as a whole.
- You can always refer to this when addressing the whole group's errors and this will guide your instruction for the next steps to take in moving forward to the next lesson.
